VPA Book Group: Bumbling Humans

Wednesday, March 20, 2024 (4:00 PM - 5:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Bumbling Humans, Reflections on Liberatory Change by Lucinda J. Garthwaite of The Institute for Liberatory Innovation.

Bumbling Humans is a collection of nearly 40 short essays in just 109 pages. If you’re anything like me, your average day has had more things to do than time to do them. A book on my nightstand is mostly a wish. The stack of books I’d love to read has piled up. My attempts to actually read one of the books stacked up typically turns into a couple of pages before sleep wins the day. The bite size portions are just one of the reasons why I love Bumbling Humans. In those doable doses are deep wisdom and poetry on what it means to try and care in a world full of bad news and fear forecasting. Bonus: it is as practical as it is inspiring.

From the jacket cover, “If one thing is true about humans, it's that we are complex creatures. Our thoughts, histories, and experiences create unique perspectives about the world and how we interact with each other. Yet, time and again, we reveal our collective tendency to react from a place of fear.”

Format of our time together: Mike will select an essay to start the time with. Given the short length of the essays, participants will be given a few minutes to review or read for the first time. From there, we will move into informal small group discussion with a few questions as scaffolding. Participants will then rotate on selecting the next essay.
